The Czech motorbike rider Miroslav Popov finished twenty-seventh in Saturday’s qualifying for the Czech Republic Grand Prix and in the race he will start from ninth row on the grid in the lowest 125cc class race. It is not a result that makes the Czech rider with a wild card very happy but he will try his best in Sunday’s race to get the best possible position in Brno.
The qualifying for the Czech Grand Prix was largely influenced by the weather. Competitors ran their third practice sessions in rain making it impossible to try out modifications that engineers had prepared for Saturday morning. On the contrary the qualifying itself took place on a dry track and this combination did not help the Czech rider at all. However he was one second faster compared to Friday’s practice sessions and it is obvious that his performance at the technical Masaryk Circuit track is improving with increased experience.
The winner of the 125 cc class was the Spaniard Nicolas Terol (Bankia Aspar); Frenchman Johann Zarco (Avant-AirAsia-Ajo) made the second fastest time followed by the German Sandro Cortese (Intact-Racing Team Germany). The 125cc class race starts on Sunday 14th August at 11 am.
#95 Miroslav Popov (Ellegi Racing)
27. position, time 2´12.084 seconds
“The wet track at the start this morning did not help me at all. I needed more time on a dry track to become more familiar with the characteristics of this track which is very different from others. Anyway that’s how it was and there is nothing I can do about it. I managed to improve my time compared to yesterday but I am still not happy about it. It could and should have been better. If I catch up with other riders I will improve my position and start from a better place tomorrow. Starting from ninth row is not good for me and it will be extremely difficult to push through to a good position. Therefore the start will be decisive and we’ll see”.
